BECOME A CERTIFIED DIVER

PADI Open Water Diver Course

Open water diving is an entry-level PADI open water diver course that lets you dive in open waters independently. You can become a certified PADI open water diver in 3-5 days, depending on your progress. After the open water diver certification, you can do recreational diving anywhere around the world as long as you dive within your limits.

Being an entry-level diving course, the open water diving certification registration does not require you to have previous scuba diving experience. You only need to be at least 10 years of age with adequate swimming skills and good health condition.

Stages of the PADI open water diver course

The PADI open water diving course consists of the following phases:

  1. Knowledge development. This involves an online, classroom, or independent study using a PADI open water diver manual that will help you understand the fundamentals of scuba diving.

  2. Confined water dives. During this stage, you will be taken to a pool or to the shallow sea to learn the basic skills of being an open water scuba diver. You will experience breathing underwater using the SCUBA equipment for the first time.

  3. Open water dives. The final stage you need to complete before you get your open water diving certificate is doing open water scuba diving with your instructor. Here, you finally get to use the skills you learned and explore the beautiful life underwater.

If you are already a PADI Scuba Diver (partial certification) or have tried Discover Scuba Diving (Intro Diving) some place else, you can upgrade and use these credits to complete your Open Water Diver license anywhere in the wor

With your open diver certification, you can stay at depths of about 18 meters or 60 feet as a beginner. By continuing education, you can stay up to 40 meters or 130 feet deep, which is the limit for recreational scuba diving.

For diving greater depths, you may opt to upgrade to advanced open water course, which does not only include diving deeper depths, but also learning new skills, such as underwater photography, night diving, wreck diving, Nitrox diving, and more. Some dive sites, which are more challenging, such those that include caves and fissures also require advance training certification.

Another limitation that you should strictly consider is not to take family or friends to diving with you who are not open water-certified. Only a certified scuba instructor can do this even if you are taking your companion only in a pool or shallow water. You have to understand the risks and dangers this poses to you and your companion
